My parents were Republican poll watchers in a tiny precinct in Alabama when everyone I knew was a Democrat; a postmaster told me it would be better to vote for a dead dog than a living Republican. Reconstruction sentiment lasted a long time. But I think principle was more important than party for my folks. And for me. Sometime in the Spring of 1972, I started reading most of the articles in Newsweek. I still do.
